CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School wins this year’s Guardians of the City II tournament

The grand finals for the Guardians of the City II tournament was held today (9 June) at *SCAPE Singapore to a strong crowd. The game play for the tournament has also been tweaked for this tournament, allowing a deck of 6 crisis, 3 community support, 8 event and 21 defense cards.

After a gruesome 9 hours of intense match, Team Unprepared from CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls School ousted Fuhua Secondary School to emerge as champions for the school category.

NSF duo from Team Untranny Valley is the champion for the open category. Winners walked away with medals, vouchers and the coveted National Day Parade preview tickets.

Marine Parade Town Council Celebrates 30th Birthday with a bang

The Marine Parade Town Council celebrated its 30th anniversary with the residents this morning. Marine Parade GRC MPs Goh Chok Tong, Seah Kian Peng and Mountbatten MP Lim Bow Chuan was also present to the joyous occasion.

Touted as one of the most efficient town council lately, MPTC also made use of this opportunity to help the less fortunate through a donation drive.

The Block 84 Marine Parade Central Market and Food Centre was also reopened as part of the celebrations. The new Marine Parade Food Centre features higher ceiling for better ventilation, wider seats for better comfort and more spacious walkway for the wheelchair bound.

Record breaking 455 supporters shave for Hair for Hope 2019

The Hair for Hope 2019 is back, ever stronger than before! On the first satellite event at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery on May Day (1 May), an overwhelming 455 shavees came forward to stand in solidarity with children with cancer and their families.

This was the highest record for the first day in the history of Hair for hope.

This year, Hair for Hope hopes to encourage at least 6,000 participants to join  the cause and raise $3.6 million to aid children and families impacted by cancer.

All funds raised will help to fund critical programmes and services for CCF’s beneficiaries.

NCIS Ribbon Challenge 2019

The second edition of the annual NCIS Ribbon Challenge was held this morning (16 Mar)  at the open field beside Westgate Atrium and has reached many members of the public.

This educational cancer awareness carnival, where members of the public pinned a cancer ribbon each and wrote pledges to go for regular screening. At the end of the event,  more than 15,000 cancer ribbons were collected!

Cancer is currently the leading cause of death in Singapore, accounting for 29.7% of deaths in 2015. It was estimated that the lifetime risk for developing cancer in the Singapore population is approximately 1 for every 4-5 people.

Through public education, NCIS hopes to raise awareness of cancer and to prevent them through healthy lifestyle. During the carnival, oncologists also shared insights on common cancers diagnosed in Singapore – colorectal, gynaecological and lung cancers.

To further encourage an active lifestyle for better overall health, a 45-minutes mass exercise session was held on-site too.

Cashew Community Club ushers CNY with 1,000 pax feast

The Cashew Chinese New Year Celebrations this year saw a record number of residents from all races gathering together at Senja-Cashew Community Club for a night of laughter and get-together.

Hosted by Grassroots Adviser, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, this dinner saw the traditonal lion and dragon performance and performers from neighboring schools.

Funny man, Jimmy, also took to the stage and engaged the 1,000 strong crowd with games, jokes and more.

A Springtime Rhapsody with Jurong Point Shopping Centre

As Chinese New Year approaches, the shopping malls in Singapore are turning to creative ways to attract shoppers to shop and dine with them. One good example is Jurong Point Shopping Centre.

Located comfortably beside Boon Lay MRT Station, Jurong Point is a mega mall with numerous restaurants, shopping outlets and entertainment spots.

To spread good luck, shoppers who makes a minimum spending of $48 from any outlet (You can combine 2 receipts), can obtain a game card from the information counter.

This game card allows the shopper to play a fishing game using advance LED touch screen technology! Simply hold onto the fishing rod and use your bait (They’re using a soft toy lobster as a bait, so cute!) to touch the koi fish that appears on the screen. Each fish you catch earns you 10 points! However, beware of those lotus leaves floating around. Touching them cost you 10 points!

You have 30 seconds to get 80 points, which in turn earns you 16 seconds to shake the fortune prosperity tree!

Whampoa Dew HDB Welcome Party

Moving into a new home can be equally exciting and nerve-wrecking. Getting use to a new environment and the neighbors we are going to be seeing a significant amount of our lives is also equally important.

This is why HDB organizes community gatherings like the Whampoa Dew Welcome Party. Residents not only have the opportunity to meet neighbours in a light hearted way, they are also able to find out more about the upcoming services and ammenities in the neighbourhood.

The Whampoa Dew HDB Welcome Party was held on 17 November 2018 at the community pavilion and drama group actors, magicians and community groups rolled up their sleeves to entertain the strong crowd of residents on that day.

This event was also graced by Grassroots Adviser Mr. Heng Chee How and folks from different age group found something fun to do!

Family Mental Wellness Carnival 2018

A happy and healthy family can make positive contribution to one’s mental wellness! Carnival visitors picked up tips on keeping their families strong – mentally and physically. Through relationship buiding, effective communication, healthy eating, active ageing, caregiving..etc

This initiative was started in 2016 by AIC, IMH and NCSS to bring together various like-minded community partners to raise awareness on mental health in Singapore.

Since 2016, various agencies and community partners have co-organized events to commerate World Mental Health Day in October. This year, emcee Jim Koh was invited to host for the carnival, bringing about greater awareness of mental wellness to the visitors. There was also a segment where visitors can dedicate songs to their loved ones during the event!

The participating partners include agency for integrated care, institute of mental health, national council of social service, MINDSET care limited, Clarity Singapore, Alzheimer’s Disease Association, Caregivers Alliance Limited, Club HEAL, OCD Network, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore Anglican Community Services, Silver Ribbon (Singapore)

Zhenghua RC Celebrates Childrens Day and Halloween

Last Saturday, Zhenghua RC organized a Children’s Day carnival for the kids living in Bukit Panjang. There were bouncy castle, trackless train, pirate ships and many more and the kids had a blast!

The organizing committee also transformed the entire RC centre into a haunted house and got scare actors to bring a good scare to the residents.

On the performing stage, Emcee Jim Koh also played Halloween themed games with the children and their parents on stage and the residents had a great family bonding time.
